I AM MEANT FOR MORE! Sermon Series: Chosen Race - LOVE
Sermon Series Introduction: Today we are going to begin our new sermon series I Am Meant For More. An idea that begins in 1 Pt. 2:9.
Opening Illustration: Use the picture of Karis that I have on my phone background right now. Talk about how that picture illustrates so many of her qualities that get her in trouble, but I made it my background on my phone because it just reminded me of how much I love her.
Transition: For so many people the big holdup is how they consider themselves. They didn’t think they held any value or they didn’t think they were loved by anyone. Today I want you to see that you are loved and in that you can flourish and grow in 2017.
1. 1. Look at the story of the Israelite and the incident of the Gold Calf in Exodus 32
a. Lay down the guidelines: Exodus 19:3-6
b. Fear of the mountain and fear of God
c. Memory of God’s power just immediately before
d. Great sin committed attributing to some piece of metal the works of God in freeing the people from Egypt.
e. God calls them a stiff necked people and his anger burns against them
f. But then Moses recalls the promises God made to Abraham.
g. The consequences of their sin.
i. Grind up the idol and drink the water
ii. Killed about 3000 in the camp by sword
iii. God sends a plague
h. Then chapter 34 happens and God renews the covenant with his people
2. 2. Look at how this idea connects to us today.
a. Race – genos (Greek) meaning offspring or descendant
b. Gen. 12:1-3 Promise to give many descendants to Abraham
c. Deut. 1:10 fulfillment of promise to Abraham to make him a nation
d. John 1:11-13 We can become one of his children
e. Gal. 3:7-9 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, "In you all the nations shall be blessed." 9So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.
3. 3. Application:
a. God’s plan to love you has been in the works since the beginning of time
b. We don’t have to live in continual shame
i. Phil 3:13-14
c. It’s God’s love for us that makes it work not the other way around
